Care
Have your diamond jewelry professionally inspected
and cleaned at least once a year!
Can
Diamonds Break?
Diamonds
ar
e the hardest substance on earth, uniquely resistant to heat and
scratching. In fact, diamonds can only be cut or polished by another
diamond. Despite their hardness, however, diamonds can be damaged.
A direct blow (usually to the girdle area) can cause a diamond to
break along its crystal planes.
So
be aware of your diamond while wearing it, and store it in a soft,
protective pouch, separated by dividers from your other jewelry.
Cleaning
Your Diamond
A solution
of one part ammonia and six parts water can be used to clean your
diamond jewelry at home. Gentle scrubbing with a soft brush will
loosen most dirt and restore your diamond's brilliance. Always be
careful to avoid scratching the metal parts of your jewelry. Rinse
under warm tap water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Extended
Care
You
should remove your jewelry when participating in sports or heavy
labor. Diamonds can be chipped by a hard impact; and settings can
be damaged or broken. Be careful to avoid harsh chemicals like chlorine
or bleach. Repeated exposure can have a cumulative effect; making
gold brittle and more likely to break. So remember to remove your
jewelry before entering a swimming pool or hot tub.
Inspection
You
should have your diamond jewelry professionally inspected at least
once a year. It should be checked for loose stones, bent prongs,
or other signs of wear. It's a good idea to have your diamond jewelry
professionally cleaned whenever it's inspected.
